James Sinclair offers up a view that says that in some ways they are. He makes the following Venn Diagram to summarize his position. You can read his entire justification here.
An interesting note is that Sinclair refers to himself as “a liberal-leaning libertarian”. His blurb about himself on the right of his blog (Titled: HOW CONSERVATIVES DROVE ME AWAY … from conservatism, as examined by a liberal-leaning libertarian who believes in tolerance, diversity, and compassion, and is offended way too easily.) says:
I’m James Sinclair, an attorney in North Florida. I support smaller government, lower taxes, less spending, and more individual freedom, yet I want nothing to do with modern conservatism. This is my attempt to explain why. (Or, failing that, to gripe about whatever else I feel like griping about.)
OF course, my take on it ( http://ballymennoniteblogger.blogspot.com/2011/10/christians-of-world-unite.html notice I used the same diagram) is that while both movements have an overlap and both have something good to say, neither of them should be a movement that Christians should adopt… we are of the Kingdom and so our politics and economics are not of this world.
I agree, Rob. (Side note: I wish Networked Blogs interfaced better with the new facebook layout. Can never seem to catch all of the updates I want from you, John Fea, TED Talks, etc.)
